When Overthinking Meets Self-Sabotage (and You Just Want to Stay in Bed)

Let’s be honest — some mornings feel like climbing a mountain… with a backpack full of bricks, wearing mismatched socks, and zero motivation.

Today was one of those mornings.

I hit the snooze button. More than once. I debated whether the world would really fall apart if I stayed in bed just a little bit longer. And I justified all of it by saying, “I deserve a rest. I’ve been going through a lot.”

Which is true. But also — not helpful.

See, when you’ve got big goals, especially when it comes to your health, mindset, or business, there’s a fine line between rest and self-sabotage. And overthinking? That’s the sneaky little voice that keeps you tiptoeing across that line like it’s a tightrope in a windstorm.

Let’s Talk About the Elephant (Bacteria?) in the Room

Last month I shared that I’ve been dealing with H. pylori — a gut infection that’s been wreaking absolute havoc on my digestion, sleep, energy, and mood. And let me tell you, it’s still going.

There are days I feel so bloated I could float away like a sad party balloon. I’m tired, foggy, and my motivation is doing the bare minimum. I’ve had to make changes to my diet (again), stick to supplements, and trust that it’ll pass… eventually.

But I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t made me want to hide under the doona with a bag of rice cakes and avoid all responsibilities.

The good news? My skin is looking incredible. So there’s that. Small wins.

The Snooze Button is Not Your Friend

This morning, after finally peeling myself out of bed, I realised something: I don’t need to feel 100% ready to start the day. I just need to start.

And starting often looks like dragging myself to the kitchen, drinking some warm water with lemon, and doing the next thing. Not scrolling. Not spiralling. Not bargaining with my alarm clock.

Some days you’ll feel strong. Other days, you’ll feel like you’re just going through the motions. But both count. Both build momentum. And both are better than letting your inner critic win.

Overthinking: The Thief of Progress

Overthinking is the ultimate energy drain. It convinces you that you’re not doing enough, that you’re falling behind, or that your plans need to be perfect before you even start. It whispers, “You should wait until you feel better… you’re not in the right mindset today.”

And the next thing you know, an hour’s gone by, the dishes still aren’t done, and you’ve convinced yourself that watching Netflix until 2am was self-care. (Guilty. I watched a movie last night. It was late. I do not recommend this if you want a productive Monday.)

Overthinking often leads to inaction. And inaction creates that awful stuck feeling — which only feeds the cycle.

So how do we break it?

By taking messy, imperfect action. By getting up even when it’s hard. By choosing progress over perfection. And by reminding ourselves that just because we don’t feel like doing something, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t.

Self-Sabotage Wears Many Outfits

Sometimes it looks like procrastination.

Other times it looks like constantly starting new plans but never finishing them.

It can even disguise itself as productivity — like doing 87 things on your to-do list except the one thing that actually matters.

For me lately? It’s been staying up too late, sleeping in, and losing that precious early-morning groove that usually sets me up for success. I’ve had to check in with myself and say, “Is this rest… or is this resistance?”

The answer is usually clear. We know when we’re avoiding. We just need to get honest about why.

Back to the Groove — Even if It’s a Slow Dance

Today, despite the sluggish start, I got out of the house and did a few hours of work. I reminded myself that I had a colonic booked this afternoon (yes, I actually look forward to those — don’t judge). If you’ve never had one, let me just say: the sleep after a colonic is next level.

Knowing I’ve got that little refresh waiting gave me just enough incentive to push through the morning fog and do what needed to be done.

That’s what getting back into your groove looks like sometimes — not fireworks or flawless routines, but simply choosing to show up anyway.

Even if you’re bloated. Even if you didn’t sleep well. Even if your head’s a bit foggy and your heart’s not 100% in it. You show up. You do the next thing. You be kind to yourself, but also honest.

What Helps Me Reset:

  1. Reminding myself why I started.

Even if I’m tired or cranky or hormonal, my goals still matter. That version of me I’m becoming? She’s worth the effort.

  2. Limiting distractions.

No more getting lost in Netflix episodes or social scroll-holes. One movie on a Sunday night? Okay. But no more starting at 9:45pm… learn from me.

  3. Doing one thing at a time.

Sometimes just brushing my teeth and making the bed feels like a win. And honestly? It is.

  4. Getting outside.

Barefoot walks, sunshine, fresh air. The basics are underrated, and they work.

  5. Letting my routine be flexible — but not optional.

There’s a difference between adjusting and abandoning. Learn the difference.

So wherever you’re at today — whether you’re powering through or barely crawling into Monday — know this:

You’re not lazy. You’re not failing. You’re just human.

But your habits matter. Your goals matter. And your tiny actions — even when they don’t feel like enough — are building something powerful.

Let August be the month you lean back in.

Even if it’s not perfect.

Even if it starts with a snooze.

You’ve got this.

PS: Been feeling off lately? Bloated, tired, foggy, or just not quite right in your gut?

Don’t brush it off — it might be worth getting checked for H. pylori. A simple test from your GP could give you answers and start you on the path to healing. Trust your gut — literally.

And if you’re looking for that next-level reset, I can’t recommend a colonic enough. It’s been a game-changer in my own routine. I go to Bottoms Up Colonics — they’re amazing.

✨ You do you, babe — but don’t do it alone.
